How do you define a furniture? Furniture or French call it meubles, or meubilair like Dutch said, it refers to movable objects intended to support various human activities such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas) and sleeping (e.g., beds). Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), or to store things (e.g., cupboards and shelves). Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture’s functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. It can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Meubles can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which often reflect the local culture. (scr)

The evolution of furniture design starts from prehistoric ages when the first sarcophagus found and bear many different styles until today. And as we notice there is a lot of style from something which is sounds weird for some people up to some style that we known better such as a traditional style, vintage and retro then continued to a modern and contemporary meubles.

Let’s talk about contemporary and modern design. The modern and contemporary style is the latest style for urban people as they follows the style of their house which is known as minimalist modern houses.

The term “Modern” in interior design refers to “Mid Century Modern”. It is recognizable by it’s clean, unadorned interiors. Use of natural materials such as wood, leather, teak and linen are prominent. Molded plywood and plastic is very popular in modern furniture, as well as polished metal. Furniture is very open and raised off the floor allowing for an airy feeling. We generally refer to modern interiors as retro these days. (scr)

Ok, so what is “Contemporary Design” then? Well contemporary by definition means “existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time.” And that is exactly the same for the use of the term in interior design. Contemporary design refers to what is popular or used right now. Contemporary design can be very eclectic for that reason, because it is ever changing and borrows pieces and styles from all different eras.It doesn’t have to be something that is “designed” right now – for example; furniture and art from the modern era are often used in contemporary design, and tradition moldings and mill-work are incorporated in many cases. As for those reasons, contemporary and modern meubles may come along together under any atmosphere.
